Ever start a diet and then drop out? Ever start an exercise program and then stop? I have on both accounts. It can be discouraging.
I read several verses this morning that puts it in perspective.
“…discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Tim. 4:7b-8)
What struck me was the need to really focus on godliness – though this doesn’t create an excuse for unhealthy patterns. Rather, the priority, even over my weight and exercise habits, needs to be in godliness.
Perhaps these verses will prompt each of us to look at ourselves. What are our priorities? Where does the pursuit of godliness fit in?
This promise is amazing. Sure good eating habits and exercise patterns have value but only in this life. Godliness on the other hand has eternal value. Take a moment to ask the Spirit how he wants you to apply these truths.
