Yesterday I was meditating in John 6 where Jesus fed the 5000 with 5 loaves of barley bread and 2 fish. After they all had their fill, he told the disciples to gather up the leftovers. They gathered 12 full baskets – one for each of them.
“When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is come into the world.” (Jn. 6:14)
Most of us would want credit, take advantage of the new influence and power that such a miracle would generate and otherwise use the situation to leverage our marketability. Not so with Jesus.
“Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.” (Jn. 6:15)
Jesus served people for their immediate need of food but he did not do this for the show of his power, for fame, for gaining market access, nor to manipulate the situation to use people. Instead he hid himself, withdrew to fellowship with his Father.
