Matthew 23 is a sobering assessment of the religious leaders of Jesus’ day. Jesus did not waste words or try to minimize the judgement these leaders would face because of their hypocrisy. Eight times He said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites”. (See Matt. 23:13-33)
If you or I were on the receiving end of His judgement, how would we feel? No doubt they felt what we would but even more so, because Jesus condemned their duplicity in front of the crowds. There was no place for them to hide.
In this seventh decade of my life, I check myself regularly, am I a hypocrite? When I see something in Scripture or speak about some topic or see an issue in a fellow believer, I ask, ‘Do I do this? Did what I say or do match what Jesus would want’? Jesus hates hypocrisy.
Take a minute to ask the Lord to search your heart and reveal anything He wants you to confess and change.
We really need others to help us walk in a manner worthy of our calling in Jesus.
