This morning I spent a few minutes reading in Matt. 6. Here’s the passage:

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matt. 6:5-6)

Have you ever done a spiritual activity to be noticed by others? Have you ever done religious things so that people will admire or praise you? How did you feel later? Did you really have a sense of fulfillment?

Jesus indicates the emptiness of doing spiritual things for the sake of the esteem, honor or praise people might heap on the one doing the activity. Yes, Jesus says, there is a reward when other notice and esteem you but it is a short-sighted reward.

On the other hand, if we do things in secret where only the Lord sees, there is an eternal reward. This is a reward of great value given by the Father Himself.

May each of us pray to our Father in secret.
